Balclutha, Otago NEW ZEALAND

We made a quick stop at Balclutha after we landed in Dunedin Airport. Distance from Dunedin is about 1 hour drive. The most famous landmark is the Balclutha Bridge, originally built to replace the ferry across the mighty Clutha River. The first structure opened in 1868. The current concrete arched bridge has been there since 1935.

Balclutha Bridge is one of the best-known road bridges in New Zealand’s South Island. The bridge is often simply known as “The Clutha Bridge”, despite the fact that there are numerous bridges across the country’s second longest river.

If you’re feeling hungry, there are Indian restaurants around and also a Kebab & Burger shop. Looking for supermarket? You can stop by New World Balclutha or Four Square Supermarket. If you’re cooking during your trip, it’s good to buy some grocery before heading to your stay.

The main reason we stop here are for the famous bridge and food before heading to our guesthouse at Kaka Point, which is 20km away from Balclutha.
