Our New Zealand adventure started from North Island. We choose to explore Auckland city, Bay of Islands & Northland for 5 days, then the rest of the trip was in South Island. In this page I will share about Auckland City.
Journey start from Kuala Lumpur KLIA2 terminal by Airasia X and arrives at Auckland International Airport on 11 November 2017. For your info, I was planned the trip a year before the departure date. Flight booking done in November 2016 and accommodation booking done by march 2017. Indeed, there were some minor changes prior to departure date when AirAsia reschedule their flight time. We can changed our flight time with no charge at all!.
Landing in Auckland
We flew in with Airasia X from Kuala Lumpur and transit 1 hour in Gold Coast, Australia then landed at Auckland International Airport total journey was 13 hours.
Don’t forget to grab a simcard deal at the duty-free shop (before the arrival exit door). Spark 3-IN-1 sim travel pack only at $25 (normal price $29). What’s included? 1GB mobile date + 200 local & 100 international minutes + 200 local & 50 international texts + Free WIFI 1GB per day at designated wifi booths.
Car rental booking was done before the departure date. We rented a car from Drive NZ for 4 days. They don’t have counter at the Airport, hence we need to called them for pick up. Cost for renting this Toyota Corolla was RM343, paid during booking. We travel with toddler so we have to top up another NZD30 once for child seat.
You may want to book yours, click here. Choose wisely what type of car suitable to you and your family. Advisable not to purchase insurance when booking. Just click for basic insurance option at the moment then you can decide later when you pick up the car.
For accommodation, there’s plenty of choices. Our choice was a guesthouse at Takapuna, 10km from Auckland city. Name of the place is iHoliday cost 1 night for economy double room was NZD79. The room has private entrance and private bathroom. They only have 2 rooms with private bathroom, so make sure you check first which room to book. Common area and kitchen are shared. They also provide Self-prepared breakfast in the fridge such as egg, milk and bread.
You can ask the host where to find food around Takapuna. He showed us some recommendation and the distance from his place not so far. He’s very friendly and helpful. We managed to get fish & chips for takeaway in one of the restaurant where still open at late night. Big portion and we are sharing 3 person. First day in Auckland at night, nothing much we can do or see. Just let our body rest for tomorrow!
Our guesthouse is near to Devonport Ferry Terminal, about 10 min drive. At this terminal, they have several parking type, from 24hr free parking to charged parking space. We were lucky to get 24hr free parking when we were got there. You may wait for awhile since people drive in and out quite frequent.
You should try ride the Fullers Ferry to/from Downtown Auckland. It just a short ferry journey, as you can view Auckland city from far. We really enjoy the experience. Buy the ticket from the counter, NZD12.50 per adult return tickets.
Once you arrived Queens Street, you may start walk along the street. There’s many cafes, restaurants, shopping outlet and souvenir shops.
